Shelter Information Not all shelters will open for every emergency. Do not report to a shelter until Hardee County has announced that the location is open.

During emergencies and disasters, Hardee County may open emergency shelters to provide a safe location for residents who need to evacuate their homes. Shelter locations and opening times are determined based on the specific emergency, anticipated impacts, and community needs. When shelters are activated, Hardee County Emergency Management will provide information on which locations are opening, when they will begin accepting residents, and the types of services available at each location.

Types of Emergency Shelters

Depending on the emergency and community needs, different types of shelters may be opened.

General Population Shelters

General population shelters provide temporary refuge for residents who need a safe place to stay during an emergency. These shelters provide basic necessities and should not be expected to offer the same level of comfort as a home or hotel.

Pet-Friendly Shelters

When designated pet-friendly shelters are opened, residents may evacuate with their household pets. Pet owners should bring the supplies necessary to care for their animals, including food, water, medications, a leash or carrier, identification, and other necessary items.

Pets must remain under the control of their owners and may be housed separately from the general shelter population depending on the facility and circumstances.

Special Needs Shelters

Special needs shelters are intended for individuals whose medical or physical needs cannot be adequately accommodated in a general population shelter but who do not require hospitalization or a higher level of medical care.

Residents who may require special needs sheltering are encouraged to register with the Hardee County Special Needs Program before an emergency occurs. Registration helps Emergency Management and its partners plan for transportation, sheltering, medical support, and other needs during an evacuation.
