Mitigation

What is Mitigation?

Mitigation refers to the sustained actions taken to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk to life and property from hazards. These strategies help build a more resilient community by reducing the impacts of disasters before they occur. In Hardee County, mitigation planning is guided by our Local Mitigation Strategy (LMS) and informed by partnerships with state and federal programs.

Mitigation benefits include:

  • Reduced loss of life and property damage

  • Lower disaster recovery costs

  • Safer communities and improved quality of life

Mitigation Resources for Residents

We encourage residents to take action to protect their homes and families through state-supported programs that offer funding and guidance for mitigation:

My Safe Florida Home
A state program that provides free wind mitigation home inspections and grants to strengthen homes against hurricanes.

Elevate Florida
A mitigation assistance program that helps eligible homeowners elevate homes to reduce flood risk and insurance premiums.

Hardee County Local Mitigation Strategy (LMS)

Hardee County maintains a comprehensive Local Mitigation Strategy (LMS), which identifies hazard risks and outlines projects and policies to reduce those risks. The LMS is updated every five years and developed with input from local governments, agencies, and the public.
